Manage what your family watches with DIRECTV parental controls

  • Limit TV watching times
  • Set spending limits for DIRECTV Movies or live Pay Per View events
  • Block shows and channels based on ratings or parental preference
  • Check the ratings for movies and shows to see if they're OK for your child to watch (to see a rating, select a program, choose info, and scroll down)
  • Set up parental controls individually on DIRECTV and third-party streaming apps like Paramount+, which includes SHOWTIME or Max.

Note: Parental controls do not transfer between apps, you need to configure them for each platform your family uses, including online viewing (stream.directv.com).


Set up parental controls with your remote

It's easy to enable parental controls with your remote.

  1. Press MENU on your remote.
  2. Choose Settings or Settings & Help (varies by receiver type).
  3. Select Parental Controls and follow the prompts to review or edit your settings.
  4. Select Lock Now and enter your PIN.

Note: The first time you enable parental controls, you'll be prompted to create a four-digit PIN code. If you forget your PIN, Learn how to reset it.


Set up parental controls on Chrome/Safari browser or DIRECTV App

  1. To set up parental controls, do the following:
    • On Chrome/Safari, sign in at stream.directv.com and perform the steps 2 to 6.
    • On DRECTV App, open the app on a smartphone or tablet and perform steps 2 to 6.
  2. Select the profile icon to open settings.
  3. Select Preferences > Parental Controls.
  4. Select the toggle to turn controls on or off.
  5. Enter your four-digit PIN.
  6. Set restrictions by ratings for Movies, TV Shows, and Unrated titles.
Note: Access is locked after five failed PIN attempts in the app. Your sign-in password is required to unlock.

Turn parental controls on or off

Watch worry-free with parental controls. It’s easy to set up a four-digit personal identification number (PIN) to control who can watch shows with specific content ratings. Be sure to set up a four-digit parental controls on every device your family uses. These settings don’t carry over from device to device.

Heads up: You must set up parental controls individually on DIRECTV and third-party streaming apps. These settings don’t carry over from device to device, you need to configure them for each platform your family uses.
 

DIRECTV device, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, or Roku

  1. Open DIRECTV on your TV.
  2. Go to Settings and then Preferences.
  3. Select Parental Controls and follow the prompts.

Heads up: The first time you enable parental controls, you'll be prompted to create a four-digit PIN code. You can try to confirm your PIN 5 times. After that, you'll have to enter your DIRECTV sign-in info to continue.

Movies
  • G: General audiences. Most parents find this material suitable for all ages.
  • PG: Parental guidance suggested. Parents may find portions of this material unsuitable for younger children.
  • PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned. Portions of this material may be unsuitable for children under 13.
  • R: Restricted. This material is specifically designed for adult viewing and may be unsuitable for children under 17.
  • NC-17: Adult content. Material contains intense, disturbing, or graphic themes or content unsuitable for children under 17.
  • X: Explicit sexual content. This material is intended for adults only.

Note: If you choose to block unrated programs, any content without a rating or is marked as UR (Unrated) or NR (Not Rated) by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) will be automatically blocked.

    TV shows
    • TV-Y: All children. This program is designed to be appropriate for all children.
    • TV-Y7: Directed at older children. This program is designed for children older than seven.
    • TV-G: General audiences. Most parents find this material suitable for all ages.
    • TV-PG: Parental guidance suggested. Program includes material that most parents would find unsuitable for younger children.
    • TV-14: Parents strongly cautioned. This program contains some material that may be unsuitable for children under 14.
    • TV-MA: Mature audiences. This program is specifically designed for adult viewing and may be unsuitable for children under 17.
