The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are finally happening, the event that brings athletes from all walks of life to represent their countries on the world’s stage. And sure, it arrives a full year later than expected, but the coronavirus threw the whole world for a loop this past year. When are The 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics actually has several starts. The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, July 23, whereas some Olympic competition starts beforehand. Soccer and softball have games on July 21 and 22; archery and rowing have preliminaries on July 23. But the vast majority of events start after the opening ceremony.
Will any Olympic events be live?
As in some previous Olympics, a few events will be held in the morning in Tokyo so that U.S. fans can watch them in the evening. Swimmers will own a lot of that evening spotlight, with several finals scheduled to run live in prime time in the United States.
How can I watch The 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
In the United States, NBCUniversal has Olympic fans covered with more than 7,000 hours of coverage planned on NBCSN, USA, Telemundo, Universo, CNBC, Olympic Channel, Golf Channel, and, of course, NBC.
The games will span more than 20 days, as coverage kicks off before the opening ceremony. The softball and soccer tournaments both start well before The Olympic cauldron will be lit, and the games will be televised.

How many medals will the U.S. get?
The medals table is always a crapshoot since the number of events changes and Russian athletes are competing as independents. However, in 2016, the United States dominated with 46 gold medals, far clear of Great Britain’s 27 golds. And, in the total medal count, the United States had 121 medals, far better than China’s 70.
With the United States expected to be competitive in new sports like surfing, baseball, and softball, it would be a massive upset if the United States didn’t finish on top of both tables.
What does the basketball tournament look like?
The men’s and women’s tournaments look the same, and they’re both a little strange. Just 12 teams will play in The 2020 Tokyo Olympics, broken into three groups of four.
The top two teams in each group qualify for the quarterfinals; two of the three third-place teams will qualify for the quarterfinals. From there, it becomes a standard knockout tournament. Winners move on, losers go home or play for bronze. The United States qualified for both tournaments and is the favorite in both tournaments.
When is the opening ceremony? What is the time difference?
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, July 23, at 7 a.m. Eastern time and 4 a.m. Pacific. The official commencement of The 2020 Tokyo Olympics games will be shown in primetime on NBC on tape delay. Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York City and 10 hours ahead of Los Angeles.

What are the new Olympic events?
For the first time, there will be skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, and karate. So basically, if you have any interest in a sport, you’ll find something to watch.
How much money is involved in The 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
The competitions and the medals are what the games are all about for fans. But The Tokyo 2020 Olympics happen because of money, and where there’s money, there’s a will to play. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were supposed to cost Japan about $16 billion in preparation fees. The cost estimates ballooned to about $25 billion in 2020. Then the coronavirus pandemic caused a one-year delay, and some estimates say the games will cost Japan up to $36 billion. By contrast, the Las Vegas Raiders’ new stadium cost a mere $2 billion.
The only way for Japan to get any payoff is to play this summer. Even if there aren’t fans in the stands, The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will rake in money, with NBCUniversal alone paying $1.45 billion to broadcast the games. TV rights alone are expected to bring in about $8 billion, and don’t forget about sponsorships; they’re worth billions more.
How is Japan doing with coronavirus?
In Japan, there was a lot of nervous hand-wringing in May as coronavirus cases spiked. But the country’s numbers have plummeted, with Japan now reporting daily new case numbers akin to what the state of Florida reports every day, and Florida doesn’t have capacity limits on sporting events. (Or anything else, for that matter.) Japan is on pace to have more than 25% of its population vaccinated before the games kick-off.
Could The Tokyo 2020 Olympics be canceled again?
It’s extremely unlikely. Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said in late June he would not rule out holding The 2020 Tokyo Olympics without spectators if the capital was under a state of emergency for COVID-19.
“In the event a state of emergency was declared, then we can’t rule out not having spectators,” he told reporters during a tour of vaccination sites in Tokyo.
Pointedly, Suga did not mention delaying or canceling the games. So The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will go on, and we’ll all get to watch on TV, which was basically the plan all along.
