What is ‘Sweet Magnolias’ About?

Sweet Magnolias is a heartwarming Netflix drama series set in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. The series centers around three best friends — Maddie Townson, Dana Sue Sullivan and Helen Decature — known as the Magnolias. Each of the friends is there for each other as they go through the ups and downs of life in Serenity. They regularly get together to catch up on each other’s lives and “pour it out” over a pitcher of margaritas.

How Did Season 3 of ‘Sweet Magnolias’ End?

Warning: spoilers ahead!

The first two seasons of Sweet Magnolias ended on dramatic cliffhangers. Season 1 with the unanswered question of who was driving the flipped car and if anyone was hurt in the crash, and season 2 with Cal’s dramatic fight and arrest at Sullivan’s. But unlike the prior seasons, Sweet Magnolias season 3 left on a happy note as Dana Sue and Ronnie celebrated their vow renewal with a beautiful barn ceremony.

Check out the video below for a refresher on what happened in season 3.

What Will ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 4 About?

Netflix hasn’t provided a lot of information about what fans can expect in season 4. The show’s official logline says, “Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias takes us from Halloween to Christmas, with surprising laughter, unexpected heartbreak and renewed resolve along the way.” The show also released two holiday songs, “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” sung by Heather Headley and “Margarita Christmas” by Dylan Rysstad, which you can expect to hear in the new season.

‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 4 Cast Guide

Serenity may be a small town, but the cast of characters is not. Check out this character guide to help refamiliarize yourself with the cast ahead of the season 4 release.

Main Characters

JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend, mother of three, the manager of The Corner Spa and ex-wife of Bill Townsend. She’s one of the three Magnolia best friends and is dating Cal Maddox.

Heather Headley as Helen Decatur, one of Serenity’s most trusted attorneys and part of the Magnolia friend group.

Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue Sullivan, owner and chef at Sullivan’s. She is the mother of Annie, married to Ronnie and is one of the three Magnolia best friends.

Chris Klein as Bill Townsend, a doctor and father to Ty, Kyle and Katie. He and his wife Maddie split at the beginning of season 1 after he had an affair with his nurse, Noreen, and got her pregnant. Fans also found out at the end of season 2 that he is the biological father of Issac Downey.

Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen Fitzgibbons, she started the series as a nurse at Bill Townsend’s practice and his fiancé. She and Bill have a newborn daughter together named Rebecca “Bex” Fitzgibbons. After leaving Bill, she’s now living with her friend Issac and working at The Corner Spa.

Justin Bruening as Cal Maddox, a former professional baseball player and Maddie’s love interest. In season 2, Cal lost his job as the Serenity High School baseball coach after the team lost the State Championship.

Carson Rowland as Tyler “Ty” Townsend, Maddie and Bill’s oldest son and was the star pitcher on the Serenity High School baseball team. After injuring his arm, Ty has been trying to figure out what to do after high school now that he’s not playing baseball.

Logan Allen as Kyle Townsend, the middle child of Maddie and Bill. Unlike his athletic brother Ty, Kyle’s interest in theatre instead of sports often makes him feel misunderstood by his dad.

Ella Grace Helton as Katie Townsend, the youngest child of Maddie and Bill. Katie was previously played by Bianca Berry Tarantino in seasons 1 and 2, but was recast in season 3 due to scheduling conflicts.

Anneliese Judge as Annie Sullivan, Dana Sue and Ronnie’s teenage daughter who works at Sullivan’s after school.

Chris Medlin as Isaac Downey, Issac works in the kitchen staff at Sullivan’s. He came to Serenity to find his birth mother. Viewers learned at the end of season 2 that the town’s reporter, Peggy Martin, is his biological mother and, in a shocking revelation, that Bill Townsend is his biological father.

Brandon Quinn as Ronnie Sullivan, Dana Sue’s husband, Annie’s father and a carpenter. He and Dana Sue were separated at the start of the series, but after working on their marriage, the two celebrated their reconciliation with a vow renewal at the end of season 3.

Dion Johnstone as Erik Whitley, a sous chef at Sullivan’s and one of the best pastry chefs in Serenity.
