San Antonio Spurs Rivalries
The Spurs were a force to be reckoned with in the early 2000s and holds the record for highest winning percent among active teams. It’s no surprise they’ve built up a few rivalries in that time. Here are a few of their most prominent:
San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Lakers
This is perhaps the Spurs’ biggest rivalry, especially during the 2000s when they frequently clashed in the playoffs. The rivalry was defined by the matchups between the Spurs’ Tim Duncan and the Lakers’ duo of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. From 1999 to 2010, either the Spurs or Lakers represented the Western Conference in the NBA Finals nearly every year, creating some of the most memorable playoff battles in NBA history.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks
Known as the “I-35 rivalry,” the Spurs and Mavericks have faced each other numerous times in both the regular season and playoffs. This in-state rivalry was particularly fierce during the early 2000s, with stars like Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki leading their respective teams. Between 2001 and 2014, the two teams met in six intense playoff series, with the Spurs winning four of them.
