The New York Islanders are a bona-fide dynasty in the NHL, and any true dynasty has its fair share of rivals. Here are few of the Islanders’ most famous rivalries.
New York Islanders vs. New York Rangers
Known as the “Battle of New York,” the rivalry between the Islanders and Rangers is one of the NHL’s most heated. It dates back to the Islanders’ entry into the league in 1972, and the proximity between the two teams intensifies the competition. The rivalry has seen many memorable moments, including numerous playoff battles in the 1970s and 1980s, and the Rangers’ dominance in the 1994 playoffs when they swept the Islanders on their way to winning the Stanley Cup. Recently, the rivalry remains fierce, with both teams regularly contending for Metropolitan Division dominance.

New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers-Islanders rivalry was particularly intense during the 1980s when both teams were powerhouses in the NHL. The two teams faced off in several key playoff series, with the Islanders emerging victorious in 1980 on their way to winning their first Stanley Cup.
The rivalry cooled somewhat after the NHL’s reorganization in the 1990s, but it reignited when the teams met in the 2020 playoffs, with the Islanders winning a tightly contested seven-game series to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
