Indianapolis Motor Speedway Raceway Specs
The legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an iconic track in the motor sports world. It’s home to one of NASCAR’s biggest races of the year, and it’s home to the Indianapolis 500 Formula 1 race, one of the three races in the Triple Crown of Motorsports.
Located in the aptly-named Speedway, Indiana, just miles from Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the third-oldest permanent racing track in the world and can hold over 257,000 attendees, making it the highest-capacity sporting venue in the world. Opened in 1909, it’s designated a national historic landmark.
The track itself is 2.5-miles long, oval in shape, and has four identical turns with 9.2 degrees of banking. It’s nickname, the Brickyard, comes from the fact that the track was originally paved with bricks. The Start/Finish line is still made of brick, in homage to the track’s roots.
Past Winners of the Brickyard 400
The NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400 was first run in 1994, the first race other than the Indy 500 to be held there since 1916. The race drew large crowds and carried one of the largest payouts of the series. The race was not held between 2021 and 2023, with the track instead hosting the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard combined road course race, but will return in its original format this year.
