Game of Thrones fans who have been waiting patiently for more information on HBO’s upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon, just received the equivalent of seven blessings – a premiere date.
The Targaryen-centric spin-off will spread it’s leathery wings later this summer when House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO and Max, the network announced today.

Along with the premiere date, HBO also released a slew of new character photos, which you can view on HBO’s official House of the Dragon site.

Taking place 200 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will focus on the rise of the Targaryens as they conquer Westeros leading up to the event known to fans as the Dance of the Dragons, a familial war for the Iron Throne amongst members of House Targaryen that sends shockwaves through Westeros for generations to come.

House of the Dragon boasts a stellar cast including Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra, the famed dragon-riding daughter of King Viserys, played by Paddy Considine, as well as Matt Smith as Prince Daemon, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, Olivia Cooke as his daughter Alicent and Steve Toussaint as the notorious pirate Lord Corlys Velaryon, better known as the Sea Snake to fearful Westerosi.

With input from George R.R. Martin and helmed by Miquel Sapochnik, who directed several of Game of Thrones most visceral and memorable episodes, including Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, and Winds of Winter, House of the Dragon is perched to once again set the Game of Thrones fandom, and likely much of Westeros, aflame.
