When Gary Mitchell (Lee Bowman), a highly successful radio singer, decides against renewing his contract, his agent, Doug Blake (Jack Carson), opts to cut ties and find an even better talent. Traveling from Los Angeles to New York in his replacement search, he discovers Martha Gibson (Doris Day), a single mother with a day job and a great voice. After a series of mishaps, Doug recruits Martha to join him in California, where they face a long, uphill battle to stardom -- and possibly romance.
