The 10 best players in Liga MX

The 10 best players in Liga MX

Liga MX is in full swing, and we’re here to highlight 10 of the best players in the league. This is an unranked list, as there’s always a lot of movement in these rankings based on injuries, overall fitness level and other variables during the season.

Let’s jump in!

Florian Thauvin

When Thauvin opted to leave Marseille in 2021 and sign with the Tigres of Liga MX, the soccer world took notice. It was a huge deal for a French star to cross the Atlantic and play for a Liga MX squad. On top of that, Thauvin turned down an offer from Italian powerhouse AC Milan to sign with Tigres. He’s currently the highest-paid player in Liga MX, which has put a target on his back. Unfortunately, he has been a bit of a disappointment for Tigres, but he has time to turn that around. He’s a ridiculously talented player who needs to stay healthy and show his value on the pitch.

André-Pierre Gignac

While Thauvin is the most recent French star to cross the Atlantic to play in Liga MX, he definitely isn’t the first. Gignac left Marseille in 2015 to join Tigres as well. In stark contrast to Thauvin, Gignac hit the ground running for Tigres. He scored 28 goals in his first season with the squad, and he’s been a great player for them ever since.

Guillermo Ochoa

At 37 years old, Ochoa continues to play like a superstar. The legendary Mexican keeper is currently the best keeper in the Liga MX, and he’s probably the best Mexican keeper of all-time. His unforgettable performances for Mexico in the World Cup convinced people that he has six fingers on each hand. It’s so much fun watching Ochoa play keeper.

Alexis Vega

Vega has been a key player for both the Mexican national team and Chivas de Guadalajara in Liga MX. Over the summer, it was rumored that Vega would leave Liga MX to go play in Europe, but he ended up re-signing with Chivas de Guadalajara.

In an interview with 90min, he said The dream to go to Europe remains intact. Obviously, I re-signed with Chivas with the illusion of making and playing in the World Cup, but the idea doesn’t leave my mind. I’m sure, and again if I keep working hard, the opportunities will come…And when the moment comes, I will move to European football.”

Henry Martín

Martín is the leading scorer in Liga MX this season, and it’s looking like his great performance is opening up some huge opportunities for him. He’s being talked about as a potential addition to the Mexican national team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In addition to that, it’s being rumored that he may make a move to Portugal next season. Sporting Lisbon appears to be interested in Martín, so this maybe his last season in Liga MX. Club América fans need to appreciate Martín’s goal scoring touch while they can.

Alejandro Zendejas

Zendejas is another Club América player. His dual citizenship (United States and Mexico) has caused controversy among American and Mexican fans this season ahead of the World Cup, but that hasn’t had an impact on his play for Club América. He’s been great for Club América this season, which has made the Mexico and United States national teams fight even harder to secure his commitment to play for their respective squad. Mexico wants Zendejas to sign a document that will renounce his U.S. eligibility, but he hasn’t signed the document yet.

Dani Alves

Alves’ best days are way behind him, but he’s still a very good player. The Brazilian legend is one of the biggest winners in soccer history. During his career, he has won 47 different awards/titles across his professional teams and Brazil national teams. Unfortunately for Alves, his Pumas UNAM squad is one of the worst teams in Liga MX. It must be tough for this legendary winner to keep taking home Ls in the twilight of his career.

Carlos Rodríguez

Rodríguez has been a star at Cruz Azul. He’s currently the second highest paid player in Liga MX. Fans in Mexico need to appreciate him while they can because there’s a good chance this young star may transfer to a European squad in the near future.

Nicolás Ibáñez

Since joining Pachuca in 2021, Ibáñez has been one of the premier goal scorers in Liga MX. It’s a lot of fun watching Ibáñez when he has space to operate around the box.

Maxi Meza

The Argentine winger is the third highest paid player in Liga MX. Meza has played really well for Monterey over the past three years. At 29, he may have found his niche as a star in Liga MX.
